How to achieve your study goals with action steps
Let’s be honest. Most of us have written down a few goals and hoped we’d magically achieve them just by having them on paper.
We might even glance at them occasionally or say a quiet affirmation like "I'm going to achieve this, this time." But unless something in our day-to-day changes, nothing really happens. And after a while, those goals start to feel more like wishful thinking than actual plans. Time goes by, and it's too late, we didn't make it. Then we start mumbling negative things and self-criticise.
If you want to actually achieve your goals, you need more than a list. You need a plan for what you’re going to do differently.
Moving away from wishful goals to achieving goals
The difference between setting goals and reaching them comes down to Action Steps. And what are Action Steps? These are small, doable things you plug into your weekly planner that push you a little closer to your goal, week by week.
Big goals can feel overwhelming. But small steps are exactly that, small steps. We can do those.
Let's unpack Action Steps
Action Steps are the little tasks or habits you add into your routine that move you forward. They’re specific. They’re scheduled. And they’re what turn your goal from an idea into a result.
Let’s say your goal is to "Improve my grades in science to the next level by the end of the term".
Your Action Steps might be:
- Watch one science video every Tuesday
- Create flashcards after every class
- Review last week’s notes every Friday afternoon
Or maybe your goal is to "Improve my mindset and motivation towards school by the end of the term".
Your Action Steps could be:
- Write in your journal three times a week
- Reflect on your weekly wins every Sunday
- Listen to a motivational podcast on the way to school
Whatever the goal is, there’s a small step that fits into your life now, not someday later.
You may be thinking? Where do I write and track these action steps? You can use an Action Steps to Goals template. And you can use the freebies available here!
How to use the free goals and action steps printable

This simple Goals + Action Steps spread helps you break it down visually.
- Start with the goal - Write down one main goal in each box on the left. Keep it focused. Not “be better at everything”, but something like “feel confident and motivated in English class” or “be more organised with my time by week 2 of the term.” Be specific about your goal and include a timeframe for when you wish to achieve it.
- Plan your action steps - In the matching boxes on the right, write the specific things you’ll do to work toward that goal. Make sure they’re things you can actually do, small enough to slot into your week.
- Stick it somewhere visible - Don’t tuck it away. Put it in your journal, on your desk, on your wall or in your locker. Let it remind you what matters and what you’re working toward.
Goals don’t work unless you do. You just have to keep playing the game, a little at a time.
