Study before sleep: a simple habit that improves memory

An illustrated info graphic of how reviewing your study notes before sleep can boost the recall of that information.

Have you ever watched an intense movie before bed, only to dream about it all night and wake up exhausted? That’s not random. What you focus on right before sleep can influence how your brain processes it, for better or worse.

Now imagine swapping that movie for a set of study notes. Sound nerdy and boring. Maybe, but it's also kind of powerful.

Why it works

Studies show that your brain continues to work on whatever it was focused on just before you fall asleep. When you study right before bed, your brain strengthens the connections it made while learning. This may help you retain information, consolidate memory, and recall it more easily when it matters, like during an exam.

Research backs this, but results can vary depending on sleep quality, fatigue, and what you’re studying. But without going into all the boring scientific details and terminology, let’s say this - learning, followed by sleep, may help cement knowledge in our brains.

What this could mean for you

If you want to boost your study results with minimal extra effort, try this experiment:

Instead of idle, useless doom scrolling or watching YouTube, use the 30–60 minutes before bed to:

  • Review key terms or flashcards
  • Talk through your notes out loud
  • Practise a presentation
  • Listen to your audio notes

You don’t have to overdo it. Give your brain something useful to work on while you sleep.

Small habit but with a possible good outcome

This could be one of the easiest ways to improve your study habits without adding more study hours. By making your pre-sleep routine useful, you’re training your brain to work for you, even while you sleep 🙂

Try the experiment but remember this does not replace your normal study.
